Alfriston School is an outstanding special school with academy status, we are an ambitious and dynamic SEND school providing a specialist education for 163 students between 11 and 19 years of age, who have moderate learning difficulties and may have associated additional needs. We are seeking an enthusiastic Food and Nutrition Teacher (Food Technology subject) who will inspire and motivate young people to learn about food and nutrition. As the subject teacher you will also teach a second subject within the school timetable. As the Food and Nutrition Teacher you will teach students of different ages and abilities and help them understand the connections between what they eat and their health. You will help the students develop their practical skills in choosing and preparing food. This will help them make informed decisions to maintain and improve their physical and mental health. You will play a pivotal part in rolling out the ‘food vision’ of the school development plan, covering sustainability, work related learning, which is a programme offered to students to provide them with knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for adult and working life.
The school has excellent facilities which offers a high-end kiosk to students, and will have the use of a new dining room including a café, where you will support the students in work related learning, enabling skills for life.

About the role
The Subject Teacher has the central responsibility of encouraging children to learn by making the subject taught both interesting and accessible. The student’s success in acquiring new abilities, skill and understanding depends primarily on the quality of teaching we are able to offer.
Job Purpose
To teach students within the school with particular responsibility for the general education, pastoral care and welfare of the students in their class. This includes maintaining records, assessment and liaison with parents and other professionals, and to carry out such duties as are reasonably assigned by the Headteacher. The class teacher is also responsible for the efficient use of the SSA, demonstrating good practice and delegating duties.
Main Core Duties
• Plan and prepare courses, schemes of work and individual lessons, appropriate to the needs and interests of students.
• Promote a wide range of teaching and learning styles to enable students of all abilities to be appropriately challenged.
• Ensure that students work in a positive, stimulating environment where work is displayed and achievements rewarded.
• Contribute to the whole school cycles of assessment, recording and reporting including Annual Reviews; Academic Reviews and Parents Evenings.
• Be involved in pastoral care and responsibilities.
Subject Responsibilities
• Co-ordinate and monitor the implementation of their subject area, providing support to colleagues in the teaching of that subject
• Provide a consistently outstanding role model and demonstrate high quality teaching.
• Keep up to date with developments within the subject, and that a current scheme of work and subject policy is in place.
• Promote the effective management of student behaviour and safeguard the welfare of students and staff.
• Teach, according to the educational needs and students assigned to the class.
• Monitor, assess and maintain records on students’ progress, academic and behavioural, and use these to inform planning and teaching.
• Supervise the work of any School Support Assistants (SSAs) within the classroom, delegate duties and maintain an ordered classroom.
• Contribute to meetings, discussions and consultations as necessary.
• Promote equal opportunities within the school and to represent the school positively.
• Demonstrate good practice and to be able to support and encourage colleagues.
Pastoral Responsibilities
• Communicate to students the values, standards and expectations of the school.
• Contribute to the life of the community according to individual talents and skills, including a willingness to undertake the organisation of extra-curricular activities.
• Participate in the arrangements made for the supervision and safety of the students between lessons and during unstructured times.
• Attend scheduled meetings with colleagues and parents and carers.
• Promote the department and the achievements of the students within the wider community.
• Ensure that student progress targets inform curriculum planning.
• Assist with a Pastoral Tutor group programme.

Specialist Subject knowledge in Home Economics, Food Technology
Essential/Desirable Knowledge, Experience & Skills
Previous experience as a Home Economics or Food Technology Teacher
Ability to Teach a Secondary Subject in English, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Design and Technology or Art and Design
Understanding of how children with MLD/SLCN learn and effectively apply their learning
Experience working within a Primary or Secondary setting
Knowledge of various teaching methods and current education trends and initiatives
Monitoring and evaluating teaching and learning
Deep understanding of the national curriculum and education requirements
Exceptional organisational and communication skills
Dedication to students and education
Confident ICT user

Highly developed interpersonal skills
Ability to successfully work in collaboration with colleagues
