We are looking for a Senior IT Engineer to be part of a team that supports Buckinghamshire Council’s ICT application needs. If you have experience upgrading, maintaining, and patching SAP Business Objects, developing in Fabric and SQL, and providing Oracle technical expertise for licensing and technical issues, this role is perfect for you.

This is a Secondment/Fixed Term Contract opportunity until the end of March 2026. 

We require the successful applicant to work in our Aylesbury offices for a minimum of two days per week. Applications for part-time hours would be considered, please indicate your preference on your application.

As our Senior IT Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and troubleshooting software applications, infrastructure, and systems for our business users. This role focuses on Fabric (including Power BI), SQL, Oracle, and SAP Business Objects. A strong understanding of Microsoft’s Power Tools, Power Automate, and Power Apps will be advantageous. Additionally, broader knowledge of IT areas, including infrastructure, cloud services, security, and networking, would also be considered an advantage.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior IT Engineer to:

  • Project manage and deliver our SAP Business Objects upgrades and patching, in line with our customers’ needs and requirements, and provide the specialised support this system requires.
  • Contribute to the development of our Fabric data platform and power platform.
  • To be responsible for the co-ordination of on-going Oracle maintenance for our key business systems: Idox, Capita One Education and One transport.
  • Act as the Oracle technical specialist (Oracle Database Administrator) and SAP Business Objects (Administrator), ensuring the co-ordination of any developments and the on-going Oracle maintenance for our key business systems: Idox, Capita One Education and One transport.
  • Work collaboratively and advise our ICT partners on all aspects of Oracle installation, upgrades, patching, and licencing, and carry out those upgrades and patches including related application software for our key business systems: Idox, Capita One Education and transport.
  • Champion continuous improvement for our Oracle and SAP Business Objects systems to enable the continuous improvement of our key applications and to reflect the needs of our customers.
  • Work closely with our internal and external stakeholders to identify priorities and opportunities to improve our infrastructure, security, and functionality.
  • Monitor contracts and/or co-ordinate delivery with partners to ensure services and goods are delivered on time and budget to agreed standards. Ensure operational issues are resolved or escalated as appropriate.

The successful individual will report to the Applications Team Manager (Corporate).

About you

Are you an IT professional with a passion for solving problems and providing excellent customer service? Do you have a strong technical background in software applications and server administration? If so, you might be the perfect candidate for this position.

Given the breadth and diversity of our customer base, you will be expected to support a diverse range of IT systems and will need a strong problem-solving mindset underpinned by great technical skills to deliver our customer needs. The post holder will also provide guidance and advice on how to use our applications effectively and efficiently.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience of Oracle database administration, SAP Business Objects administration, and related application software.
  • Experience of Fabric, data platforms and the Microsoft power tools
  • Excellent project management, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • A customer-focused approach and a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
  • An excellent understanding of how to set up, secure, back up, and restore servers in an Azure environment.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server, Windows operating systems and Azure
  • Good communication, customer service, and people skills
  • At least five years of experience in application support, software development, or system administration
  • Skills in working with numbers and details.
  • Skills in using initiative and judgement to research, analyse, identify, and resolve problems.
  • Skills in writing and explaining technical information clearly.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and skills.

The successful candidate will be based in our Walton Street offices in the heart of Aylesbury town as a “any desk” worker. As this is a career graded post the salary will be based on your experience and skill set. The career grade salary range is G8 to G9.
